Prycts wb Noticias, entrevistas y buenas prácticas para los que se dedican a hacer proyectos web.

Founders at Work es una colección de entrevistas con los fundadores de famosos proyectos web que han triunfado: Paypal, Hotmail, Blogger, Bloglines, 37signals, Firefox… Su autora, Jessica Livingston, es socia fundadora de Y Combinator, una empresa bastante innovadora de inversión de capital (de la que también es fundador Paul Graham).

Aunque de momento sólo me he leido las de Flickr, del.icio.us, Gmail, TripAdvisor y HotorNot, ya es suficiente para que ya pueda recomendar encarecidamente la lectura del libro.

Aparte de las muchas anécdotas y consejos interesantes que aportan los fundadores, lo que más me ha llamado la atención es que todos (hasta donde llevo leido) coinciden en que no hay que esforzarse en hacer muchos planes para tu proyecto: nunca salen como te lo esperabas.

You can’t get too attached to your vision in a startup, because things may change. It’s not a sign of failure to change your vision. [...] Things won’t go according to plan.

Nothing ever goes according the plan. You can’t dwell on the fact that your plan didn’t work. In our case, we didn’t even have a plan, but it would have been worthless to have one anyway, since we just kept moving as far as we could. You have to hustle; you can’t have a plan and cakewalk it.

We started out expecting to do the game and we ended up doing a photo-sharing site. We never expected that, could not have planned that.

Por cierto, otra anécdota buenísima (y que me ha recordado a Panoramio) es la que cuenta James Hong, uno de los fundadores de Hot or Not, que al principio tenía a sus padres moderando las fotos, para que no se les colara porno:

I originally had my parents moderating since they were retired, and after a few days I asked my dad how it was going. He said, ‘Oh, it’s really interesting. Mom saw a picture of a guy and a girl and another girl and they were doing…’ So I told Jim, ‘Dude, my parents can’t do this any more. They’re looking at porn all day.’
